Sarah Zimmerman: From Crochet Hobby to 250,000 Books Sold

Sarah Zimmerman’s portrait beside her crochet projects, with her name and Creator Story branding.

In July 2025, Sarah Zimmerman announced that Crochet Cute Critters had sold more than 250,000 copies. Years earlier, she had been teaching herself to crochet and discovering that she enjoyed writing patterns as much as making things.

Her business, Repeat Crafter Me, grew around sharing that knowledge. Free tutorials, books, brand relationships, and paid downloads now offer different ways for readers to engage with her work.

A Crochet Hobby With a Design Foundation

Sarah learned to crochet in 2011, but she already had experience in creative work. She graduated from the University of Washington in 2001 with a degree in visual arts and worked professionally as a graphic designer for six years.

Her biography explains that free patterns helped her learn. She wanted to give other people the same opportunity, so sharing accessible instructions became part of her approach.

An early example is her newborn owl hat pattern, published in April 2012. That September, she released larger sizes in response to reader requests, alongside answers to common technique questions.

Playful Projects With a Practical Purpose

Sarah’s crochet gnome pocket ornaments show how she combines character with usefulness. Their small pockets can hold gift cards, candy, or handwritten notes, while different colors and buttons adapt the design for different occasions.

The tutorial includes written instructions and a video, helping readers choose how they follow along.

Her ghost-and-pumpkin project takes a different approach. Sarah credits the Yarnspirations ghost pattern she used and adds instructions for her own orange beanie accessory.

Together, these projects illustrate two useful creative habits: developing original ideas and clearly crediting the source when adapting someone else’s work.

From Blog Patterns to 250,000 Book Sales

In October 2016, Sarah announced Corner-to-Corner Lap Throws for the Family, published by Annie’s. Its five designs use charts and instructions to guide readers through blankets featuring animals, stripes, and other motifs.

Her later book, Crochet Cute Critters, was published in 2019 and includes 26 amigurumi animals—small crocheted stuffed characters.

On July 29, 2025, Sarah reported more than 250,000 copies sold and translations into Polish and French. That milestone gives readers a concrete picture of the reach one carefully themed collection can achieve.

The figure represents book copies sold, rather than Sarah’s personal earnings.

A Community Beyond the Blog

Sarah’s official contact page also gives a sense of the audience around her work. When checked on October 18, 2026, it listed these self-reported figures:

Audience measure Figure listed
Monthly website pageviews 1 million+
Instagram followers 215,000+
YouTube subscribers 130,000+
Newsletter subscriptions 15,000+

These figures come from her media information and may differ from current platform counts.

For a craft educator, the different channels provide different points of contact: searchable projects, video demonstrations, social updates, and emails that invite readers back.

A reader might discover one seasonal pattern through social media, then return to the website for another project or follow a video demonstration.

Keeping Patterns Free While Selling Convenience

In September 2025, Sarah launched ad-free PDF patterns, starting with 20 popular designs after repeated reader requests. The blog versions remained free; customers could pay for a cleaner file to save or print.

Her Etsy shop offers individual downloads. Examples checked on October 18, 2026 include:

PDF pattern Price in USD
Dumpling $1.00
Mini yarn skein keychain $1.50
Gnome pocket ornaments $3.50

Prices may change.

Sarah also discloses brand relationships and Amazon affiliate participation. Alongside books and PDF sales, these show several commercial paths around her tutorials.

Her story offers a practical lesson: build something helpful, listen to the people using it, and create paid options that address a clear need.
